The Bungler's Paradox: In Search of the Nexus, Book 1
by R.M. Wilburn
Ages 9-12 244 pages Outskirts Press December 2005 Paperback

With a clever combination of magic and mystery, The Bungler’s Paradox is an enchanting story. Author R.M. Wilburn weaves a tale rich in imagination, yet sprinkled with a good dose of reality.

Buggy Crenshaw is not a typical eleven-year-old. Her father is a Bungler, and when his latest invention blows the doors off their garage, her family moves to Lloyd’s Hollow, a place where magic and imagination rule. This concealed corner of the world is about to see the unveiling of a sinister plot to ensnare mankind. Buggy soon realizes that she didn’t arrive there by accident but through a supernatural summons. She was called upon to save the world, but are her dreams big enough?

Adventure abounds in this well-written story. Buggy and two of her friends steer the action around mysterious twists and turns. The explanations of the magical elements are smoothly introduced into the novel, giving both Buggy and the reader necessary information. A variety of unique characters provide a broader view of the world within Lloyd’s Hollow and often contribute a delightful touch of humor. With a steady acceleration to the center of the story, pages will turn quickly. Danger, deceit and a bit of deviltry await Buggy and her friends, but they have the means to overcome evil, if they are strong enough to survive.

Subtly set within the larger story is a wonderful admonition for young people to dream big. In the preteen world of visual cues and imagery, it’s refreshing to read a story that explores the wonders of imagination. The author has successfully created a world abundant in mystery and possibility. Readers will feel the thrill of Buggy’s discoveries and realize that Lloyd’s Hollow may not be too far from their own homes.
