Miss O & Friends: Trouble with a Capital O
by Devra Newberger Speregen, illustrated by Hermine Brindak
Ages 9-12 122 pages Watson-Guptill July 2006 Paperback

Olivia, otherwise known as the fabulous Miss O, faces fifth grade with great trepidation. She has been assigned the worst, hardest, strictest teacher in the entire school, if not the universe. Mrs. Hintermeister, called The Hinter Monster by students who ought to know, has a reputation for running a no-nonsense classroom. It is rumored that in a fit of rage, she once threw a piece of chalk at a student, putting out his eye.

If that weren’t enough for Miss O, her older sister and best friend, Juliette, has become distant and secretive just when Miss O needs her most. Since she has entered middle school, Juliette spends all her time on her cell phone with a girl Miss O has never met, and she refuses to have lunch with Miss O and friends.

Add to this mix a baking contest, soccer, and disappointing grades, and Miss O has a rollercoaster ride through the fifth grade. She’s in for a few surprises in her struggle, including help from unexpected places.

This is a nice little book in a series 8-10 year old girls will relate to and enjoy. Miss O and her cronies, Isabella, Harlie, and Justine, are believable characters in a middle-class world where nothing too terrible (at least to an adult mind) happens as they get through the fifth grade.
