Ages 9-15 160 pages Newmarket Press January 2002 Paperback

Literally hundreds of letters from young girls and young women, student questions and personal experiences were poured into My Feelings, My Self: A Growing-up Guide for Girls. This 160-page self-help book could be considered a workbook or, possibly, a diary. How rare it is to find an honest and up-front resource that helps young girls find confidence in their life, learn to understand their own feelings and defuse arguments. The authors discuss how communication is sent and received (body, tone of voice, choice of wording, etc.) so clearly that readers will immediately understand. My Feelings, My Self – A Growing-up Guide For Girls also includes roughly 30 illustrations by Jackie Aher.

The workbook is divided into three parts:
  • Part One delves into dealing with existing friends and making new ones. School cliché groups, peer pressure, popularity, crushes and relationships with boys are also discussed.
  • Part Two provides detailed information on how to communicate with parents and solve common problems such as rules, communication break-downs, expectations and misconceptions. The book will help readers recognize how arguments can get out of control and provides techniques to handle a difficult parent or guardian.
  • Part Three supplies a list of resources that readers can turn to for more information. Advice on how to be safe online while looking for information and support and where to get personal advice outside of the family or friend circles are also discussed.

In every section, personal experiences of individual adolescents and young women are included to show the varying feelings and situations for each girl. Quizzes and exercises are used to bring deeper consideration into the feelings and thoughts the reader has for each issue.

My Feelings, My Self, one in a series of six book by mother and daughter author team Lynda and Area Madaras, has been translated into 12 languages and is one of the leading education books for adolescents.  Adolescent counselors, educators, parents and social workers would certainly benefit from this book, a valuable guide for any young woman growing up and facing challenges.
