Rules to Rock By
by Josh Farrar
Grades 5-8 256 pages Walker Books June 2010 Hardcover

Annabelle Cabrera is a rock star - or at least she was until her parents ripped her out of the Brooklyn music scene and moved the family to boring Providence, Rhode Island, so they could record their own record.

Now, while her old band, Egg Mountain, looks for a new bassist, Annabelle has to find a whole new band. As if that weren’t bad enough, Abuela stayed in the city, and her mother and father are so consumed with their own indie music that they sometimes forget they have children at all.

Even so, Annabelle starts school ready to find new bandmates. Expecting lots of interest, she is surprised to find most of the students shy away. It soon becomes clear there are talented musicians available, but members of an already established rock band terrorize the student body. Can Annabelle and a few scared misfits bungle their way toward rebellion?

Rules to Rock By is a rock ‘n’ roll version of Revenge of the Nerds for middle-graders. It not only provides great advice for those interested in the music industry but also for those dealing with the pressures of pre-teen life.

Author Josh Fararr is a writer and musician. After writing well over 200 songs, he decided to develop a story based on his own struggles playing in a teen band. Although this is his first book, it should not be his last.

And to entice teen rockers, there is a soundtrack available. Email a copy of your receipt for the novel to josh@rulestorockby.com, and he'll email it to you for free! Check out www.rulestorockby.com for more information. Rock on!
