Grades PreK-1 48 pages Random House January 2014 Hardcover

It was difficult to wipe the smile of my face when I first read Ten Eggs in a Nest, a new book from the Dr. Seuss Bright and Early Books for Beginning Beginners series. The book has classic Seussian elements: large font, simple sentences, and vibrant illustrations. What makes this book particularly appealing is the story to follow which, although very basic, will have a way of pulling a new reader along.

Gwen the Hen and Red Rooster are expecting to be parents as they wait the arrival of their chicks. However, there can be very little planning because (as we all know) “it’s bad luck to count your eggs before they hatch.” A sweet tale follows, as Red struts to Worm World to get a worm for each chick, never quite knowing how many worms he should purchase to be sure all of his newborns receive a treat.

Ten Eggs in a Nest will be a delightful edition to any child’s book collection, and the good news is parents are likely not going to mind that their children decide to read this book over and over again.
